Early overreactions to Phillies spring training
Let's get nuts
Spring training is great because there’s nothing but good news.
Pitcher looks terrible? He’s just getting started and he’s probably working on some things.
Pitcher looks fantastic? Cy Young season incoming.
Here are some Phillies who are playing well through a handful of Grapefruit League games, along with some wild speculation about what they could do in the regular season.
Bryson Stott
Stott hit his second home run of the spring on Sunday, sending an 0-2 curveball from Yankees righthander Cade Winquist 411 feet to center field. The second baseman has five hits and five walks in just 13 plate appearances. That’s a .769 on-base percentage.
There are good reasons to believe that Stott’s early success isn’t an illusion. While he slashed a modest .257/.328/.391 overall in 2025, he hit .310/.377/.503 in August and September. And the improvement coincided with a new-look batting stance that resembles Kyle Schwarber’s.
Stott saw 4.40 pitches per plate appearance in 2025, ranking third in all of baseball, and provides value with his glove even when he’s struggling at the plate. If he keeps things rolling offensively he could really help round out the Phils’ top-heavy lineup.
Overreaction: Stott posts a career-high OPS around .800 and hits 15-20 home runs.
