If the personality free Scott Rolen is in Hall of Fame, with his body of work, Cole deserves to make it.

Excellent point

If we adjust HOF case with wins as era-dependent, I think we should also adjust with strikeouts and other stats as era-dependent. Does Hamels' case still stack up if we compare him to contemporary pitchers who have similar strikeout numbers? I'm guessing there would be a few so-so contemporary guys with big strikeout numbers, so I wonder if that should impact his case.

Fair point. Here’s the list of all 17 starters with 2500 strikeouts who are not in the Hall. (Sorted by K/9.)

I don't see a link or anything? Could be user error on my end. But looking up the stats, Hamels seems to stack up well with Vazquez, Finley, Burnett, etc. Also looking at active players by career strikeouts, I'm just a casual fan but it seems like there are plenty of active players who have a good chance at 2500k - guys who we'll think about like, "Wow, Chuck Finley was actually pretty good" but not HOF.

Anyways, seems to me like Hamels is a good border case. I wouldn't be upset if he got in, just like I wouldn't be upset if Cone or Felix or Bartolo got in. Glad you're making an interesting case for him, I enjoyed reading it!

Sorry, not sure what happened haha. Here’s the link: https://www.sports-reference.com/stathead/tiny/25d8e

And yeah, it wouldn’t be a tragedy if Hamels ends up as one of the best pitchers not in the Hall. But either the standards will change or we just won’t see many SPs inducted in the future.

Thanks for reading!!!

Good read John! Cole prob doesn’t get in , but you break down the reasons why he should be considered more . I really don’t get why Jimmy Rollins gets little to no traction . He was a really good player ! Hope all is well
